Historic Point of Rocks
Living History Day

See the county’s newest Civil War park at Historic Point of Rocks. This special event will focus on the Civil War medical story, with reenactors portraying surgeons, soldiers and even a special appearance by Clara Barton, who served as superintendent of nursing at Point of Rocks Hospital from June-August 1864.

After the Army of the James arrived at Bermuda Hundred in May 1864, a Union field hospital was established at Point of Rocks. The hospital served the 18th Corps of the Army of the James, which included the United States Colored Troops. As the Bermuda Hundred Campaign gave way to the Siege of Petersburg, the hospital further developed into a large complex that could hold more than 3,000 patients at a time. Located on the site is the Strachan house, which served as the surgeon’s quarters. The Strachan house and grounds will be open to the public for the first time during this event.
